time travel goes brr

"Luke."

"What?"

"What's the best way to get Jade's attention and keep it for a while?"

"Wha - why are you asking me?"

"Because I've had all of three conversations with the man." Obviously.

"Oh, right. ... Just dangle a mystery in front of him, I guess."

"Makes sense. Thanks."

"Wh- thanks?! Asch, don't just - and he's gone."

There's a note on your pillow.

This would be annoying, under most circumstances. You don't have time for the things that usually drive teenagers to leave things on each others' pillows; you have no interest in whatever a secret admirer might be thinking.

But there are two circumstances about it that raise your eyebrows and are enough to make you not immediately throw the folded slip of paper in the trash after you pick it up.

First, the only person who has ever looked at you with anything like those emotions is Saphir, and he's bold enough that he would just say it to your face if he was interested in something of the sort. Most of the others at the military academy recoil from both of you, as unsettling and out of place as you are.

Second, and far more importantly, you always lock your tiny, windowless private chamber when you leave. It was locked when you returned. And you've only been at classes for a couple of hours. Again, the only other person with a key is Saphir, who is bold enough to say everything to your face, and jealous enough that he wouldn't have let anyone else in. The fact that it's addressed to you - with a simple Jade - and on the correct pillow only adds to this, though you suppose it was an even half chance even at a blind guess.

It's enough to get you to sit on your cot and open the folds of the paper, at least. The handwriting isn't one you recognize, something best described as an elegant scribble.

N.D. 1994. The golden messenger falls in flames. An echo of sin rises, which shall plague the lands of the north for six years until it is sealed away. From the ashes, a new power arises in Malkuth.

...Well, that is not what you expected to find folded on your pillow. You've never held particular faith in the Score, but this is... Unsettlingly on-point, considering the dates involved. There's only one thing that it could be related to, and the fact that someone knew enough to tie it back to you...

You scrutinize the rest of the note more keenly, but it's actively more mysterious than the Score fragment.

Do you understand the consequences of what you've created? Have they told you about Hod?

And beneath that is a series of dates, times, and addresses. Potential meeting places, you assume, should you desire to give in to your curiosity. It's a set of options that you appreciate.

The last line is Don't bring Saphir. I can't stand him. which is the only thing of any meat that your note-writer tells you about themselves. Hm.

You commit three of the possible meeting places to memory, and burn the note into ash with a quick arte. You might as well see about getting answers to a few of those questions, if you have the chance.
